Most people from other nations who ultimately want to live permanently in the United States must go through a long process. Often, this process involves acquiring a nonimmigrant visa first, and maintaining legal status over a period of years. The next step is to get an immigrant visa.
In other cases, special circumstances enable an aspiring U.S. immigrant to successfully apply for an immigrant visa sooner, effectively accelerating the process for becoming a legal permanent resident (LPR).

- EB1 status for persons of sustained, documented extraordinary ability in a scientific, scholarly, artistic, or other specialized field
